<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I'm participating in the MTBoS blog challenge called Blaugust. If you want to see a full list of the bloggers participating in Blaugust, click on the image above. My goal is to blog once per week for the month of August, then to continue blogging weekly throughout the school year. I've got a lot to write about from this summer and about the upcoming school year but I'm still trying to process it all, so those will be coming later...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><a href="https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/1121101654/Boone_Cyclist_logo_color.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="412" height="200" src="https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/1121101654/Boone_Cyclist_logo_color.jpg" width="164" /></a><a href="http://www.highcountryrec.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/rocky-knob.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="238" data-original-width="184" height="200" src="https://www.highcountryrec.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/rocky-knob.jpg" width="154" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">For now I'm going to write about a few of the lessons I learned this week. On Tuesday & Thursday, I spent my day coaching at our local <a href="http://booneareacyclists.org/kids-mtb-camp-2017/" target="_blank">Kids Mountain Bike Camp</a> which is hosted by <a href="http://booneareacyclists.org/" target="_blank">Boone Area Cyclists</a> and Watauga County Parks & Recreation. If you have spent any time getting to know me, you know that I love teaching kids and I love biking; being able to do both at the same time is aMaZiNg and makes my heart happy! So most would think that it would be a no brainer for me to help coach a kids mountain bike camp but it actually terrified me.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qyJ-bICAT5o/W2R2M0Mm3fI/AAAAAAAAA14/Fh_mDPIxj9IvTIXIvCnJ-wLTbDY2FJL9QCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_2034.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qyJ-bICAT5o/W2R2M0Mm3fI/AAAAAAAAA14/Fh_mDPIxj9IvTIXIvCnJ-wLTbDY2FJL9QCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_2034.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I've helped coach at mountain bike camp the past two summers and both times I've almost chickened out after agreeing to help. I do not consider myself to be an awesome mountain biker, I still consider myself to be a novice and have a lot to learn about mountain biking. I feel inadequate to help kids when I barely know more than some of them and the majority of the kids have skill sets higher than my own. Plus the camp is held at Rocky Knob Park, where I had a freak accident in April 2017. Even though I've rode the trail multiple times since that day, I definitely have anxiety about being on that trail. However, both summers have proven to be such a great experience for me and I'm so glad I didn't chicken out!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This summer (just like last) I willing volunteered to work with the beginner shredders - these are kids that may or may not have been on trails before but do have experience with riding bikes. We spent our days working on handling skills and getting comfortable with maneuvering on a trail. With these kids we spend a lot of time at the pump track and then get up on our beginner trail called "Keen-dergarden." By the end of the week, the majority of the beginner group is able to move on to the next trail but there is always one or two that need extra practice with this trail. I don't know if it's because I enjoy rejoicing in the small things or because I can actually teach them something but I've discovered that this is the group that I love to work with.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Xl82Olouxgc/W2R2N75UKhI/AAAAAAAAA1s/omXMHhDiISABPjoOgTfSsMplDfasec3ggCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_3901.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Xl82Olouxgc/W2R2N75UKhI/AAAAAAAAA1s/omXMHhDiISABPjoOgTfSsMplDfasec3ggCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_3901.JPG" width="240" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This week, I worked with the group on Tuesday and noticed a rider was not at the level of the others in the beginner shredder group, so when I arrived on Thursday I gladly volunteered to work with him. We try not to single out the kids, so we either divide up the groups ahead of time or have options and let the kids decide which group they want to join. To divide up the groups on Thursday morning, we let the kids choose their groups and I offered a Pump Track & Keendergarden group - to my surprise five kids wanted to be with me and my <a href="http://www.nationalmtb.org/about-2/" target="_blank">NICA</a> student coach, Ethan. (He will be a freshmen at my school in the fall and I so hope to be his math teacher one day!) Ethan and I quickly realized that our group of five was made up of 4 kids that could easily ride the trails but wanted a chill day and the 1 kid that was not at the level of others.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xwq4apzqsvM/W2R2NUPBJlI/AAAAAAAAA2E/246aMmBbeIIOQ1YQ1wX5cbFo1qiAf4KKwCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_3852.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1330" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xwq4apzqsvM/W2R2NUPBJlI/AAAAAAAAA2E/246aMmBbeIIOQ1YQ1wX5cbFo1qiAf4KKwCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_3852.JPG" width="266" /></a><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CYYoXUWEa28/W2R2Nsha3tI/AAAAAAAAA2I/r06Y24qJDv04NH2caVPJ1r5Z53_MAbZgQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_3886.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CYYoXUWEa28/W2R2Nsha3tI/AAAAAAAAA2I/r06Y24qJDv04NH2caVPJ1r5Z53_MAbZgQCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_3886.JPG" width="240" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Ethan & I decided that we were going to need to split into two smaller groups and I figured at this point I'd be spending my day with the one kid. I was fine that that because I knew that I would work with him on small sections of the trail and we wouldn't move on until he could ride each portion. My goal was to get him comfortable riding his bike on the trail. When it came time for the kids to choose which mini-group they wanted to be a part of, a kid spoke up and said "I don't care, I just want to ride with my friend." I was excited to have a second kid to work with but I was a little hesitant. I hate to stay it but in my mind I kept thinking, "Once we get up on the trail you will realize how long this will take and that we really won't be riding, you're going to regret this decision." Little did I know that I was about to learn a lot about friendship from this kid and I'm so thankful that I didn't discourage him from joining his friend.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KvHkRrf-oXQ/W2R2M3mhzWI/AAAAAAAAA18/Edq1arZm8nwYfEIGrx89JhQ7xnefDbpfwCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_3845_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1148" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KvHkRrf-oXQ/W2R2M3mhzWI/AAAAAAAAA18/Edq1arZm8nwYfEIGrx89JhQ7xnefDbpfwCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_3845_1.jpg" width="229" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">We ended up working on 3 small sections on the Keendergarden trail - two switchbacks, one to the left and one to the right, and a small section that has a little (3' long) wooden bridge. We probably spent 30 minutes at the first switchback and 20 minutes at each of the other sections; at each section the same thing would happen. At first, the friend would be leading our little group and he would do the section. Behind him was the kid that was needing help and would try to do what his friend did. I was behind him talking him through what he should be focusing on. When the kid got to the point where he had to come off the bike, we would stop and all get off of our bikes. I would then talk through what to be looking at during each part of the section, where his bike should go, and then we'd walk the section as if we were on our bikes.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CFirnlliVtE/W2R2OAg00EI/AAAAAAAAA2E/TJ2eUIyczMsMUmW9wJ8yU6n-KU-EgZM1ACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_3937.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CFirnlliVtE/W2R2OAg00EI/AAAAAAAAA2E/TJ2eUIyczMsMUmW9wJ8yU6n-KU-EgZM1ACEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_3937.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">At this point, his friend would grab his back and return to the beginning of the section. He would ride his bike to demonstrate what it should look like while the other kid and I would stand off trail and watch. Then the kid that was needing the help would go to his bike and try. I would be coaching him and his friend stood near me, cheering him on. After each failed attempt his friend would go to where he was, offer a smile, and give him a little word of encouragement. Such as: "You are doing so great!" "You almost made it this time, I know you'll get farther next time! " Don't worry, this is hard but I know you can do it!" Then I'd have the kid talk through what went wrong and what he needed to do in order to ride the section and he'd try again. We would repeat this as many times as necessary for the kid to master the section and each time, I'd stand in amazement as his friend cheered him on. But for me the best part for me was the first time the kid was able to fully ride one of the sections. His friend would scream in excitement and run to where he was and give him a high-five and tell him how proud he was of him.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2c7JINom0q8/W2R2OUT9SFI/AAAAAAAAA2I/S2e988wDE_Yfr-nFzQuoiNGvFfczwXVLACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_3939.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2c7JINom0q8/W2R2OUT9SFI/AAAAAAAAA2I/S2e988wDE_Yfr-nFzQuoiNGvFfczwXVLACEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_3939.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This happened at EVERY. SINGLE. SECTION with no loss of genuine encouragement or enthusiasm. As we were riding down the trail to head to lunch, I realized that I want to be like this kid's friend and here are the three lessons that I will carry with me forever. I know these lessons will make me a better friend, teacher, wife, aunt, and overall person.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">1. When someone is afraid, I will smile and offer words of encouragement.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">2. I will celebrate someone else's victory, whether small or large, like it is my own.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">3. I will choose to spend time with the people I love, even when I could be doing other things, because I simply want to be with them.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I thought that coaching at mountain bike camp would allow me to teach kids about riding bikes, which it did, but the impact I'll carry with me is far greater than what I taught kids. </span><br />

And that's a good thing, a very good thing! Next week I will introduce factoring to my Math 1 students. This is the first time they will have seen this skill and we will start by factoring out the greatest common factor (GCF).<br />
<br />
This weekend as I was planning, I decided I wanted to create a fun foldable for students that had them find the GCF of a polynomial and factor out the GCF. I remembered the foldable that I had used in previous years from <a href="https://mrswilliamsmath.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Dividing by Zero</a>, another Mrs. Williams that teaches math, for <a href="https://mrswilliamsmath.wordpress.com/2012/04/30/interactive-foldable-book/" target="_blank">exponent rules</a>. I decided that this would be the perfect style of foldable and that my students would either love or hate me for it.<br />
<br />
I started by creating the foldable with scratch paper, so that when I went to create the actual foldable, it would be easier to see what went where. I was so excited that I tweeted about it. :)<br />

Then you will need to cut along the dotted lines. To do this, fold the paper in half and cut from the center fold to the outside fold. </div>

The super awesome part about this foldable is that it has a secret, hidden portion. If you begin to fold the foldable up towards the center, you will see that it will start to open up. You can gently pull it apart and it will reveal the secret portion of the foldable. Which for this one, has where students will factor the polynomial. </div>

My wonderful math intern from Appalachian State University taught my students how to identify lines as parallel, perpendicular, or intersecting from graphs and equations. The following day I was set to teach my students how to write the equation of a line parallel or perpendicular to a specified line going through a specific point, but I wasn't sure how I was going to teach it. I knew my students were struggling with their algebraic skills and I was nervous about how they would learn the material if the algebra was getting in their way, although I didn't know how to teach it without this being an issue.... Cue Tuesday morning and a conversation with a former student.<br />
<div>
<br />
<div>
On Tuesday morning during my Math FLEX session, I had a former student come by to get help in her current math class. She is currently working on transformations of geometric figures and she was struggling with rotations. In her class, they had been using the rules for rotations. I started by reviewing the rules with her, then showed her I keep track the different rules. I could tell that this wasn't working for her.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oaQvDFZmNQM/Wf5Ku0RCcDI/AAAAAAAAAvE/-2RZXJzyImQX_b7cXt68Ce3PLl9uVOfrwCLcBGAs/s1600/Rotation.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="362" data-original-width="415" height="278" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oaQvDFZmNQM/Wf5Ku0RCcDI/AAAAAAAAAvE/-2RZXJzyImQX_b7cXt68Ce3PLl9uVOfrwCLcBGAs/s320/Rotation.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I decided to get out some graph paper and show her how to graph the rotations and from there she could come up with the image coordinates. All of a sudden her there was light behind her eyes, where there was once fear, and I could see the joy in her face. She saw how rotations worked and understood what it meant. It wasn't another rule for her to memorize, it just made sense. I was elated for her and at the same time a little disappointed that I didn't start with the picture first.<br />
<br />
<i>How often do our students need to see something concrete, like a graph, before moving onto the abstract, like algebraic rules? The answer is probably 99% of the time, especially for students have difficultly in math. </i></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Throughout the day I kept thinking back to this student and how excited I was for her; not only for the knowledge she gained but that there was a simple solution to helping her understand. All she needed was to SEE what was happening! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
During my planning period on Tuesday, I realized I had to finalize my plans for writing parallel and perpendicular equations. It was Halloween and I was going to spend time with my nieces, so I wouldn't be home until late and I knew I wouldn't want to finalize my lesson plans once I got home. I thought back to working with the student on rotation and I had an epiphany, what if I taught my students how to graph parallel and perpendicular lines before I taught them how algebraically find the equation? It made sense in my head but I wasn't so sure it was the right thing to do, or that they would understand and see the connection. </div>
<div>

<i>(My nieces dressed as Descendants Uma and Evie for Halloween.)</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
</div>
<div>
My co-teacher wasn't at school, so I couldn't run the idea by her. So I did the next best thing, I went down the hall to visit another teacher and ran my idea by her. She loved it and thought it would work.<br />
<br />
Now, I just needed to figure out how to create a foldable for our interactive notebooks to include this new part of my lesson. In the foldable I wanted to include parallel and perpendicular lines, writing equations by graphing and using algebra, and I wanted it to have an order to it. The teacher I was talking to suggested a flip book and I jumped on the idea. </div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-49xROAe9WQQ/Wf5UNJ6tUqI/AAAAAAAAAvw/y31JlQw2EEgb_PoZMzm1guc8o-dRi7QUQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_2313.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-49xROAe9WQQ/Wf5UNJ6tUqI/AAAAAAAAAvw/y31JlQw2EEgb_PoZMzm1guc8o-dRi7QUQCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_2313.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I knew that <a href="http://iisanumber.blogspot.com/2013/01/functions-domain-and-range-foldable.html?_sm_au_=isVSRWZ6JrTWMKWj" target="_blank">Kathryn</a> had a template for a flipbook because I had used it before so I re-downloaded the template and whipped up a foldable. The foldable came together so quickly and I was excited that I had the time to think about it, talk it over with another teacher, and then create it before leaving for the day. However, I wasn't too sure how it would go over with my students. I didn't know if it would make sense or if it would be too much at one time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jvaAi2kx9nw/Wf5URz8G7vI/AAAAAAAAAvw/0Etem8qV3XAjp58UidX6XZxCuLh2mowSQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_2314.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jvaAi2kx9nw/Wf5URz8G7vI/AAAAAAAAAvw/0Etem8qV3XAjp58UidX6XZxCuLh2mowSQCEwYBhgL/s200/IMG_2314.JPG" width="150" /></a><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gag7AOw2R1k/Wf5UR0sT5YI/AAAAAAAAAvw/0MK_V_CntKg6Slw4tNjhh81RPH243iXGQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_2315.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gag7AOw2R1k/Wf5UR0sT5YI/AAAAAAAAAvw/0MK_V_CntKg6Slw4tNjhh81RPH243iXGQCEwYBhgL/s200/IMG_2315.JPG" width="150" /></a> <a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EOAucy652jk/Wf5UR_Xat7I/AAAAAAAAAvw/xx-6QkodIY0pcEZ8-SA5xS3XIbsG_z8RACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_2316.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EOAucy652jk/Wf5UR_Xat7I/AAAAAAAAAvw/xx-6QkodIY0pcEZ8-SA5xS3XIbsG_z8RACEwYBhgL/s200/IMG_2316.JPG" width="150" /></a></div>
<br />
We spent the next two days on writing equations of parallel and perpendicular lines, beginning with graphing, then with algebra. It went amazing, so much better than I expected. This was the first time that my students could write the equations of parallel and perpendicular lines after only seeing it a couple of times. While students were practicing, I kept walking by my co-teacher and our interns and would say, "I just can't believe this; the students understand and can do it!" </div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nwlYJmxUig8/Wf5UTxfOBQI/AAAAAAAAAvw/y1281X3IHMkqf0pfpK_FZYaAZu-E2IfYgCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_2320.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nwlYJmxUig8/Wf5UTxfOBQI/AAAAAAAAAvw/y1281X3IHMkqf0pfpK_FZYaAZu-E2IfYgCEwYBhgL/s320/IMG_2320.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm happy to report that after two days of working on parallel and perpendicular lines, over 90% of our students had mastered this skill. I don't have the data from previous years but I can say without a doubt, it wasn't that high of a percentage of students nor was it that quickly.<br />
<br />

I'm so glad that with the help of a former student and fellow teacher, I was able to remember the power of a picture!<br />
<br />
After tweeting about this experience, <a href="https://twitter.com/dynamic_math/status/926648108192272385" target="_blank">Tim Brezezinski</a> replied with a <a href="https://www.geogebra.org/m/wbV8z4NH" target="_blank">link to a geogabra investigation</a> on parallel and perpendicular lines. I plan on using this as one of my stations during our unit review next week!<br />

However yesterday I posted a picture on Twitter of an activity I did with my Introductory Math students and large number of people asked for files of an activity. I figured the easiest way would be to blog about it and share the files.<br />
<br />
There have been a lot of changes since I last blogged in May 2016. I have switched jobs and started teaching in different school district, where I began teaching a new course for me, AP Statistics, and had three preps. My new school also has a different schedule that I had to get accustomed to: my planning period alternates every other day, half of my classes are on a block schedule, the other half are on an A/B modified block schedule. I really love where I'm teaching, what I'm teaching, and my schedule, but it was a lot of changes in a short amount of time.<br />
<br />
On top of that, my husband and I sold our previous home and bought a new house. Now I don't have a lot of time because I'm working on completing my National Board Certification and decided to start doing Standards Based Grading with my students. Which is A LOT of work the first year!<br />
<br />
That's enough of a tangent, I'll actually get to my post about comparing slopes and y-intercepts war.<br />
......<br />
<br />
After my students played Sarah Carter's @mathequalslove, <a href="https://mathequalslove.blogspot.com/2016/05/free-download-evaluating-functions-war.html?_sm_au_=isVWSHSPr0QfNTH7" target="_blank">Evaluating Functions War</a>, they insisted that we play War again. We ended up having a two hour delay on Tuesday because of flooding, so I had time to create a card set for my students to play War again.<br />
<br />
We are currently working with linear functions and students needed continued practice with identifying the slope and y-intercept from various representations. So I figured I'd create a set of cards for students to play War and compare slopes and y-intercepts from multiple representations. I ended up created 18 different cards with linear functions.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KRqprCARv_A/WfDkEs0EksI/AAAAAAAAAuQ/7YPZ8F-xVwY9mzJN-qrUEnpqKPSwXfDrwCLcBGAs/s1600/LFWar_1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="459" data-original-width="600" height="244" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KRqprCARv_A/WfDkEs0EksI/AAAAAAAAAuQ/7YPZ8F-xVwY9mzJN-qrUEnpqKPSwXfDrwCLcBGAs/s320/LFWar_1.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sN2_lerUc2g/WfDkFnE2bGI/AAAAAAAAAuU/ToqWwyvEz3cUW64en_t4gHMOyMHH4fBRQCLcBGAs/s1600/LFWar_2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="460" data-original-width="604" height="243" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sN2_lerUc2g/WfDkFnE2bGI/AAAAAAAAAuU/ToqWwyvEz3cUW64en_t4gHMOyMHH4fBRQCLcBGAs/s320/LFWar_2.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I printed these pages should that every student had one of the two sets of functions. I printed these on different colors of paper to make it easier to sort out the cards in the beginning of the game. I went ahead and grouped 4 sets of cards together into bags so that it would be easier to distribute the groups.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nWhlNidGP6s/WfDlJpIVesI/AAAAAAAAAug/sgQw1nx3Yi0QbZba3f2u3akNMAoSkOraQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_2251%255B1%255D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nWhlNidGP6s/WfDlJpIVesI/AAAAAAAAAug/sgQw1nx3Yi0QbZba3f2u3akNMAoSkOraQCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_2251%255B1%255D.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I then went over the directions for playing War, if needed, <a href="https://mathequalslove.blogspot.com/2016/05/free-download-evaluating-functions-war.html?_sm_au_=isVWSHSPr0QfNTH7" target="_blank">see Sarah's general explanation</a>. Here's how I adapted it for these cards and for my students.<br />
<br />
1. Distribute the cards to each player. Each player should get 9 cards of a matching color. Each player should shuffle their deck several times.<br />
<br style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 15.84px;" />
2. At the beginning of each round and every 3-4 minutes of the game I'd call out "greatest slope wins" or "smallest y-intercept wins." After all, I needed students to practice finding slope and y-intercept, then comparing their values.<br />
<br />
3. Each player turns over their card and determines the slope/y-intercept.<br />
<br />
4. The player with the highest or lowest (depending on the rules stated out loud), wins every other players' cards. These cards will go on the bottom of their stack.<br />
<br />
5. Repeat #3 and #4 until one player runs out of cards. Once a player has run out cards, the remaining players count the number of cards they have and the player with the most cards wins. Another round is played if time allows. (This allowed all students to be engaged the entire time we were practicing.)<br />
<br />
Note: If two or more players had identical slopes/y-intercepts, each of those players turned over a new card to act as a tie breaker.<br />

</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LPtUexrjdx8/VxpOdT5GxGI/AAAAAAAAAas/4lK7PNMd7wwe6sIHRbbo-c-pMIih8Vr5gCLcB/s1600/Untitled_4.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="206" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LPtUexrjdx8/VxpOdT5GxGI/AAAAAAAAAas/4lK7PNMd7wwe6sIHRbbo-c-pMIih8Vr5gCLcB/s400/Untitled_4.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I was invited to speak at the spring Math Night at a local elementary school about using LEGO bricks to enhance mathematical skills. I presented to a group of 3rd-6th grade students and their parents; we used the <a href="http://esd.lego.com.edgesuite.net/digitaldelivery/education/97e91562-464f-419d-805b-00937f83fc5b/public/LearnToLearn%201.0%20EN-GB.pdf" target="_blank">LearnToLearn curriculum</a> by LEGO Education.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6ZoGhIBildc/VxpgqGGjvcI/AAAAAAAAAbo/vcXgMfjj7cMfmLoHlxDYxKGAvgIlSa79wCLcB/s1600/IMG_3512.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="189" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6ZoGhIBildc/VxpgqGGjvcI/AAAAAAAAAbo/vcXgMfjj7cMfmLoHlxDYxKGAvgIlSa79wCLcB/s200/IMG_3512.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
With Title 1 money, the school was able to buy a kit for every student in attendance and have extra sets to use in the classrooms. Their K-2 students had participated in LEGO Math at the fall Math Night. The goal of this workshop was to help answer the question, "How can you use LEGO bricks at home to strengthen math skills?"<br />
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started by going over LEGO Education's 4C Learning Process: Connecting, Constructing, Contemplating and Continuing. In all phases, role of the parent is to guide their child to help them reach their solution through questions, dialogue, and building together.</div>
<br />
Before we gave the LEGO bricks to students, I reviewed symmetry with them. I had student volunteers go over lines of symmetry with the images below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ONXklsUY9Ho/VxpPIf2uupI/AAAAAAAAAa4/9OeAH3Yys5MgS9-CFvKttQ_27QLgRtIRwCLcB/s1600/Untitled_3.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ONXklsUY9Ho/VxpPIf2uupI/AAAAAAAAAa4/9OeAH3Yys5MgS9-CFvKttQ_27QLgRtIRwCLcB/s320/Untitled_3.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
With the help of the 3rd-6th grade teachers, we passed out Lego kits and a packet with instructions and various activities for the students and parents to begin practicing with.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PQgiEJralV0/VxpV5x8XGpI/AAAAAAAAAbM/NRSMKPaUwN4YxfunJrx6rcFGj28LZjvEACLcB/s1600/Untitled_2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="177" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PQgiEJralV0/VxpV5x8XGpI/AAAAAAAAAbM/NRSMKPaUwN4YxfunJrx6rcFGj28LZjvEACLcB/s320/Untitled_2.jpeg" width="320" /></a>I briefly described the activity called "Mirror Mirror." This activity reinforces the concepts of symmetry, as students are to build something that is symmetrical (either with the shape or color) and then they are to engage in a discussion with their parents. Some possible questions included:<br />
<ul>
<li>How did you decided on your design? </li>
<li>How can you check that your design is symmetrical? </li>
<li>Can you show me the middle (symmetrical line) of your design? </li>
<li>Are there any other lines of symmetry?</li>
</ul>
Then the fun started as students began to build and have excellent discussions with their parents.<br />

<br />
The packet the students were given contained other LEGO activities that incorporated math concepts such as "Block and Cover," "What's Behind My Back," and "Balancing Act." However, since the allotted 45 minute time slot was quickly coming to an end, we finished by having students build Mr. Learnie. Mr. Learnie was created by Designer Ina in Denmark and every brick in the
set is needed to make him. So is students are able to build Mr. Learnie, they know they have their entire set of LEGO bricks.<br />

<br />
The second half of my Linear Functions unit covered linear regression, residuals & correlation coefficient, literal equations, and domain & range.<br />
<br />
This booklet has been the most referred to page in my students interactive notebooks. It is a set of calculator screen shots to help students use their TI-84 calculator. There are pages on entering data, graphing data, finding the linear regression equation, and calculating the correlation coefficient. In my school system, Math 1 is the first time students have used this particular calculator. As a result these type pages really help students self-help when they have questions on how to use the TI-84.<br />

After spending a few days on linear regression models we moved on to residuals. I had students use a spaghetti noodle to approximate the line of best fit and then approximate the residual. I then gave students a graph with the actual line of best fit and students had to compare their line and residual with the true line of best fit.</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then since we had Saturday School the next day (Snow days aren't very fun when you make them up on Saturday) I created a set of scatter plots using <a href="http://graphfree.com/" target="_blank">GraphFree</a> based on the data from Lesson 8.5 of the <a href="https://www.mathematicsvisionproject.org/uploads/1/1/6/3/11636986/sec1_mod8_data_se_71713.pdf" target="_blank">Mathematics Vision Project - Modeling Data unit.</a> I had students draw a number line from -1 to 1 and then have arrange the scatterplots in order by correlation coefficient, then they were to approximate the correlation coefficient. Afterwards, I gave each group a data set for one of the graphs and they found the correlation coefficient. This activity prompted many great discussions among students. </div>

<br />
Next up was interpreting slope and y-intercept in the context of a problem. We reviewed this while doing linear regression, but student still needed more practice.<br />

<br />
Then we focused on solving literal equations. The reasoning for solving literal equations in this unit was to refresh their skills. The next unit we would be covering would be systems of equations, so I wanted to remind my students how to solve an equation for a variable.<br />

In actuality it lasted for over a month and a half due to many days off and early releases/delays because of snow! In the future I need to make this two units because it got super long; a unit of linear functions and a unit of linear regression. Today's post will have pictures and descriptions from the first half of the Linear Functions unit. I will try to post on the second half tomorrow.<br />
<br />
Students have covered linear functions in 8th grade however it is a key part of the Math 1 curriculum. In Math 1 students are responsible for interpreting linear functions and comparing linear functions to quadratic & exponential functions. Even though it was thoroughly covered last year, students still need quite an extensive review.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I started this unit with a review of writing and solving equations with word problems, since my goal was to incorporate them through the semester, instead of having one unit of review. We just practice solving equations as they come up naturally in the curriculum but I did want my students to have a point of reference in their notebooks. These files were adapted from <a href="http://mathequalslove.blogspot.com/2015/10/translating-words-into-symbols-coloring.html" target="_blank">Sarah Carter at MathEqualsLove.</a> You will notice I get a lot of my ideas for my interactive notebooks from Sarah. She does an excellent job of blogging about her class. In fact, without her resources, I don't think I would have been able to incorporate interactive notebooks into my classroom.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We then jumped into sequences, as students in Math 1 must be familiar with arithmetic and geometric sequences and writing equations in Now-Next form and function notation. I decided to cover both types at one time simply because we had already discussed (briefly in unit 1) exponential functions and it flowed well together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We started with the green cards and students had to fill in the next three terms and come up with a pattern; we then matched the sequences to a graphs. Afterwards, we formally went over the recursive and explicit formulas and they wrote the corresponding equations for each sequence. The equation notes were also adapted from <a href="http://mathequalslove.blogspot.com/2014/04/sequences-and-series-foldables-inb-pages.html" target="_blank">Sarah Carter at MathEqualsLove</a>. </div>

After sequences, we jumped into formalizing linear functions by discussing slope.<br />
<br />
The types of slope foldable is from <a href="http://mrshester.blogspot.com/2013/12/8th-grade-math-units-3-and-4.html" target="_blank">Jessie Hester at Mrs .Hester's Classroom</a>. On the inside we included a visual of Slope Dude's path.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I adapted the finding slope from different representations from <a href="https://ispeakmath.org/2012/03/07/all-about-slope-foldable/" target="_blank">Julie Reulbach at ispeakmath</a>. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we discussed y-intercept and putting the slope and y-intercept together to write the linear equation in function notation. We used color with a purpose on these notes so that students could refer back to the slope and the y-intercept individually. </div>

<br />
Then we discussed various forms of linear functions including: horizontal & vertical lines, slope-intercept form, and standard form. This foldable was inspired by <a href="http://mathequalslove.blogspot.com/2014/07/algebra-1-inb-pages-unit-6-linear.html" target="_blank">Sarah Carter at MathEqualsLove.</a><br />

<br />
We then went over multiple representations of linear functions. Students were given four problems each with a given representation then they had to create the other representations. This semester my page only has the blank problems as I spent my time working with groups on these problems and I didn't go back and fill in the page. However, I have pictures of this page from last semester.<br />

<br />
To end the first half of the linear unit, we covered parallel & perpendicular lines and their equations. We started by discussing where parallel and perpendicular lines appear in real life (and the most creative response was rewarded with a Starburst) then we moved onto the algebra.<br />

I'm going to start with my Math 1 notebook and the first unit... then upload more as I have the time. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In my interactive notebooks, I have students create a table of contents for each unit from <a href="http://mathequalslove.blogspot.com/2013/08/interactive-notebook-table-of-contents.html" target="_blank">Sarah Carter at MathEqualsLove</a>. (It's hard getting use to writing Sarah Carter, I'm so use to referring to Sarah Hagan!) Then I have students use a small sticky note to create tab so they know where each unit begins. Last year, I had students create one long table of contents at the beginning on their interactive notebook and it didn't seem as organized to me.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The first unit was an introduction to the various function types that students will be exposed to during this course: linear, quadratic, and exponential functions.This was students very first time looking at and classifying functions other than linear functions. I also chose to include absolute value functions so they could be compared to quadratic and linear functions, even though they are not in the Math 1 curriculum in North Carolina. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The majority of these pages were summarizing what we were doing in class. </span><br />

One of the first sites I cam across was this <a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1U4s3n1eGWprm56Y-j_vZesFbjPTovUj3NNDv8DsMRFc/embed?hl=en&size=s&slide=id.p" target="_blank">presentation</a> on using Chromebooks in the math classroom. In the presentation was a link to another <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/jreulbach/google-docs-presentation-global-math?ref=http://ispeakmath.wordpress.com/2013/03/20/infusing-math-class-with-google-docs-slideshow/" target="_blank">presentation</a> by Julie Reulbach. This presentation had multiple ways that she used Chromebooks in her math classroom as well as a link to her <a href="http://ispeakmath.org/" target="_blank">blog</a>. When I went to her blog, I knew I had jackpot with technology resources that I could use in my high school math class. Here was a teacher, in the same state as me, with the same use of technology, and she was blogging about how she incorporated the technology in her math class.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I began to read back through her blog posts and realized that she had taken part of the MTBoS blogging initiative in January and her post "<a href="http://ispeakmath.org/2016/01/17/my-favorite-delta-math/" target="_blank">My Favorite: Delta Math</a>"caught my eye. The website didn't have any fancy graphics but it's capabilities were exactly what I wanted for my freshmen students taking Math 1.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://www.deltamath.com/" target="_blank">Deltamath</a> is a free online math program that has an vast variety of practice problems that can be assigned to students. The problems range from middle school to calculus with everything in between, I couldn't believe my eyes! Surely, if this program had all of this for free, there had to be some catch. But so far, there has been no catch, it really is a great as it seems!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To date, I have only used Delta Math once in my class, as I've only had my Chromebooks for three school day but my students and I are in love. My students used it on Monday as a way to review for their upcoming test on Systems of Equations and Inequalities. I created 6 different assignments, each one corresponding to a specific concept, for students to work through. Students were able to pick and choose which assignments they completed, based on where they needed the most practice before the test. (When I do this again, I will make it one long assignment.)</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U7fNR87jPzk/Vvsm8_cRTII/AAAAAAAAAOE/KVN4ZuqO1NkfiAlRhBm6ygbWS35vyE_6w/s1600/deltamath2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U7fNR87jPzk/Vvsm8_cRTII/AAAAAAAAAOE/KVN4ZuqO1NkfiAlRhBm6ygbWS35vyE_6w/s320/deltamath2.png" width="234" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was easy for my students to register and get started. I was given a teacher code that they entered which linked them to my teacher account, then they entered a valid email address (all of our students have a school email address through google) and a password, then they were ready to solve problems. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Delta Math allows for differentiation. All of my students were able to complete problems at their ability level and gave them a variety of review questions. Each problem has a "Show Example" feature, where students can click and there will be a similar problem worked out with a detailed explanation of what was done. The example is even color coded, just like I would do in class. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As the teacher, I loved that I was able to go through and pick topics and that each topic had various levels. For instance, the first level of elimination only included problems where students had to add the two equations. For the second level, students had to multiple one equation by a constant in order for a variable to be eliminated and the third level required students to multiply both equations by a constant and was no longer multiple choice. It is wonderful that Delta Math has such a large amount of leveled practice problems on an assortment of topics.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My students thought the graphing feature was great and easy to use. In order to graph a line, students must plot the y-intercept and then use the rise and run of the slope to plot another point to make the line. In fact, a few asked if they could use the program on their test, as they would rather graph equations on Delta Math to find the intersection than on their calculator. (I actually prefer them to do it this way as it reinforces the concept of slope and y-intercept, not simply punching buttons on the calculator... but they also need practice with the calculator they will use on their state end of course exam.)</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The data I receive from Delta Math is simply amazing. There is a real time problem log where the teacher can see what problems students have attempted, the time and date the did the problem, and their answer. For the data driven teacher, this is a goldmine. You can sort the data by class, student, topic or assignment. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Overall, I'm very pleased with Delta Math, as are my students. A few students have even asked when they will be given another assignment to complete. It's a wonderful site that allows easily for differentiation and a variety of practice problems. <br />
So... I'm just a little over a month behind on posting Week 4 of the MTBoS 2016 Blogging Initiative. What can I say, February was a crazy month for me: there were multiple snow days and delays, I took skiing vacation with my husband to Snowshoe, West Virginia, and I attended a statewide conference on PowerSchool. Regardless, I've finally caught up with my typical school and home duties so I'm able to finish up the post I started weeks ago.</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
This was the lesson I taught on Wednesday, February 4th, 2016 with my Math 1 students. Prior to this lesson we had been studying linear functions and had on graphs, tables and equations. My students were struggling to see the connections between everything and I wanted an activity to tie everything together. I went online to see if anything like this was already created and I found <a href="http://www.ozark.k12.mo.us/cms/lib07/MO01910080/Centricity/Domain/559/Linear%20Sort%20and%20Match%20Game%201kbmize.pdf" target="_blank">this</a> but it didn't have everything I wanted, so I decided to create my own.<br />
<br />
In my card sort activity I included the following for 8 problems: slope, y-intercept, graph, table, description of slope, equation in standard form, and equation in slope-intercept form. I originally thought about including distractions but once my students got started, I was glad I didn't. They had enough misconceptions without the distractions! Thanks to @mathymeg07 for introducing me to <a href="http://www.megcraig.org/?p=1081" target="_blank">her favorite</a>, <a href="http://graphfree.com/" target="_blank">Graph Free</a>, so that I could create readable graphs for my card sort.<br />

I had students partner off. I didn't want my students working in their groups of four because I knew that all students would not participate in the discussion. I was afraid that if I had groups of 4, one or two students would do all the work and the others would contribute very little. Being with a partner forced the students to talk. My directions to students were to get with their partner and to match each graph to the correct slope, y-intercept, equation, etc. </div>

<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
<br />
<br />
Almost every group was able to easily match the equation in slope-intercept form with the graph, except for one set. [I had completed the card sort the night before and realized I didn't have the x-axis and y-axis labeled on my graphs, so it would be troublesome for students to understand the orientation of the graph. As a result, I quickly re-created my graphs but had a mistype in one of the equations. So one graph didn't have a matching equation. Woops!]<br />
<br />

<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
Students worked well with their partners to come with the 8 unique sets. However, it seemed like groups could match certain characteristics together, but couldn't always match their parts with the rest of the set. For instance, if students matched the slope-intercept equation with the standard form equation and graph, then matched the table with the slope, y-intercept; they struggled two put the two matches together to make one complete set. But with a little guidance, students were able to successfully complete their sets. </div>

<br />
I would call this lesson a success! All students were engaged with the task and talking about how to solve it. It took almost the entire 90 minute block to give directions, have students complete the task and then create their display. It was well worth the class time to have students make the connections between the equations, graphs, tables and characteristics of linear functions.<br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As a part of week two of the 2016 MTBoS Blogging Initiative, I'll be blogging about how I have finally figured out a way to get my students to make up tests/quizzes from when they were absent and my two favorite ways to have students practice skills. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One would think that since I only worked 2 partial days this week, Tuesday - 2 hour delay and Wednesday - early release at 11:30, I would have had this post up sooner... but I've been enjoying reading, cross stitching, and playing in the snow with my nieces and nephews. Anyways, here are some of my favorite things:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Getting Students to Take Assessments From When They Were Absent!</span></b></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I don't know about you all, but I typically have at least one student absent daily in all of my classes. I've tried multiple ways to keep up with who was missing, what they missed, and when they need to have their worked turned in. It wasn't until this school year, when I had a first block class with 28 students that had 148 absences and over 160 tardies during the first semester, that I discovered a way that works best for me and my students in helping keep up missed quizzes and tests.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZbdI5AXF9fo/VqPlNRo4JqI/AAAAAAAAAKQ/OLDyqFPFct8/s1600/makeup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZbdI5AXF9fo/VqPlNRo4JqI/AAAAAAAAAKQ/OLDyqFPFct8/s320/makeup.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When a student misses a test/quiz, I go and put their information on their class designated bright yellow sheet. On the sheet, I list their name, the assessment they missed, and the date it was given. Then, I place a copy of the assessment with their name on it in my tutoring folder. In our online grade book, I go in and make a note as to why the student does not have a grade. Also, on the student's make up work from their absence, I attach a sticky note reminding them of their missed assessment.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> It then becomes the students responsibility to let me know when they are going to make up the assessment. Beside these yellow sheets (and outside of my classroom door), I have a copy of our school's tutoring schedule and my personal availability for each week. Most of the time students just tell me when they will make it up, but I always have them write it down because I will forget! When a student makes it up, I blackout their name so I know it's been completed.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">At the end of each week, I look at these yellow sheets and make note of who has not scheduled a time to make up their test/quiz. If it has been 5 days since the assessment was given in class, I go into my online grade book and give them a "0" with a comment that this assessment needs to be made up, otherwise the grade will remain a zero. <i><b>This has been the game changer for me!</b> </i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9ki93rQQGKg/VqPqzhgn44I/AAAAAAAAAKo/e2XRy59qonU/s1600/IMG_2981.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="161" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9ki93rQQGKg/VqPqzhgn44I/AAAAAAAAAKo/e2XRy59qonU/s320/IMG_2981.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Now, when students (and parents) look at their math grade online, they see it with the zero included, and it gets them to make up the assessment very quickly! Where as before when I left the grade blank until it was made up, did not cause students to stress about getting their assessment taken in a reasonable amount of time.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As a result, I have quizzes/tests made up a lot sooner than before. Not only is this beneficial to me but to the students as well. :) </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Speed Dating</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is an idea I first learned about from Sarah Hagan, she blogged about it <a href="http://mathequalslove.blogspot.com/2014/01/introducing-logarithms-with-foldables.html" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://mathequalslove.blogspot.com/2015/10/emphasizing-polynomial-vocabulary.html" target="_blank">here</a>. My students beg to speed date to practice problems and they get so excited when they see their desks lined up into two rows facing each other. However, you do not always have to move your desks to speed date. If my classes are doing quick practice set that does not involve them working out a problem, I just have students stand up and complete the activity. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5LyG1mmK5_0/VqPimkxr3vI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/vbA-BKCRyV8/s1600/SP_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="172" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5LyG1mmK5_0/VqPimkxr3vI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/vbA-BKCRyV8/s320/SP_1.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">[Side note: Don't leave your desks that way if you don't plan on doing this... it may result in students getting very upset that you didn't plan on speed dating with their class... and lots of whining will occur!]</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For each speed dating activity, students are lined up in two rows facing each other, with each student having their own index card. Each index card has a question/problem written large and in marker on one side and the answer written lightly in pencil on the other side. I set a timer for the length of each "date," usually 2-3 minutes.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Once the date begins, students hold their index card with the answer facing them and the problem facing their partner. They work through one question at a time. If they get the problem right, their partner congratulates them. . If they get the problem wrong, their partner must help them find their mistake and give them feedback on how to correctly do the problem. After the first question has been answered correctly, they switch to the other problem and the process repeats.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When the timer goes off, the partners switch index cards with each other, then rotate one space clockwise. This give them a new partner and they hold the card with the question they just answered... so in theory they should be the expert on that problem and be able to coach their new partner in solving that question.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<b><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Individual White Boards</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Students loving writing on their mini white board using dry erase markers and mini erasers. I can get students to practice problem after problem just by pulling these out. There's just something about writing with a dry erase marker that makes students excited about doing math problems. Sometimes, I incorporate games into our whiteboard use, but typically I give students a problem and let them begin working it out. When a student believes they have the answer, they raise their white board so that I can see their work. I either give the student positive words to confirm that they have the correct answer or give them a strategy to help fix their work if they are wrong. I require that if a student got a question wrong, they must rework the problem until they get it correct.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After almost everyone has gotten the correct answer, I put up another problem. Students that have not finished the first problem must finish it first, before moving on. Each student works at his/her own pace and is not rushed to complete the same number of problems.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As a part of the MTBoS 2016 Blogging Initiative, I documented what a typical school day looks like for me. Here is a (not so brief) description of this past Tuesday. </span><br />
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></b>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Tuesday, January 12, 2016</span></b></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4:30am - Wake up to our smoke detector chirping... this happens frequently when the outside temperature drops below 20 degrees. Of course, my husband can sleep right through it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4:45am - After tossing and turning for 15 minutes, I get up and reset the smoke detector. This makes the chirping stop. I try to go back to sleep, as my alarm won't go off for another hour and a half.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">5:04 am - Decide that I'm not going to fall back asleep so I might as well get up, go to the living room, and grade some papers.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">5:05 am - I look at Facebook, Twitter, browse a few math blogs and a few of my high school friends' blogs to catch up with what is going on in their world before I begin grading.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">5:20 am - Grade quizzes, enter grades into our online grade book, and read/respond to a few school emails.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">6:15 am - Shower and get ready for school, do my morning devotion, and pack my breakfast.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ffSC1GS1oEU/VphgVx26_ZI/AAAAAAAAAHg/o85QGkhgayk/s1600/IMG_2936%255B1%255D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ffSC1GS1oEU/VphgVx26_ZI/AAAAAAAAAHg/o85QGkhgayk/s320/IMG_2936%255B1%255D.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7:15 am - Leave for school.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7:20 am - Arrive at school, sign-in in the mail room and head upstairs to my classroom.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7:25 am - Make sure all of my copies are ready to go for the day an placed in their class bin, updated my whiteboard with an agenda for each class and their learning target and try to eat my pop-tart for breakfast.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wIkc3R-kNdw/VphewjT43xI/AAAAAAAAAHA/O5rDl7H1LJE/s1600/IMG_2948%255B1%255D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wIkc3R-kNdw/VphewjT43xI/AAAAAAAAAHA/O5rDl7H1LJE/s320/IMG_2948%255B1%255D.JPG" width="240" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7:50 am - A student comes into my room to chat. Since I'm trying to make copies, I have her come with me to our workroom so she can talk while I get things done. She tells me about going to MonsterJam over the weekend.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">8:00 am - My student teacher arrives. It's only his 2nd day, so we go over the plan for first period, then we start discussing the likelihood that we will get an early release due to snow and the procedures for what would happen. Spoiler alert - we don't get out early but the anticipation of snow has students excited all day.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">8:15 am - The first bell rings for students to begin reporting to class. My student teacher and I join the other math teachers out on hall duty.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">8:30 am - The final bell FINALLY rings for 1st period to begin. My 1st period class is Math 1 and has 22 students, mainly freshmen with a few students that are repeating the course. After a lovely welcome over the intercom, the entire school recites to the Pledge of Alligience and has a moment of silence. We are then wished to have a "terrific Tuesday" and I can finally start my class. .</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">8:31 am - Since it is Tuesday, our warm up is "24." Students are given 4 numbers and they can use any mathematical operation to arrange the numbers to equal 24. While students are working on this I enter attendance into our online computer system. My timer goes off after 5 minutes and we discuss their ways to equal 24.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-auw9tsFBp8E/Vpl6X4-GtMI/AAAAAAAAAJM/lB-aAiMIqOU/s1600/24.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="157" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-auw9tsFBp8E/Vpl6X4-GtMI/AAAAAAAAAJM/lB-aAiMIqOU/s320/24.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">8:38 am - We pick back up where we left off yesterday - Students are working on an activity called "Up, Down or Neither" where they are given 26 graphs and are having to sort them by whether they are increasing, decreasing, remaining constant, are a combination of those three, or not a function. Then students are given equations which they are to match up with the graphs (using their graphing calculator) and ultimately separate these graphs into Linear and Exponential Functions. My students are in groups and each group ends of working at different paces. My student teacher and I constantly circulate through all groups and at this point I realize how thankful I am for my student teacher. It's so nice to be able to encourage discourse between students, help guide their thinking, and spend quality time listening to each group.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7T7gfvLyf6A/Vpl358Ba_MI/AAAAAAAAAIg/YD0MbDj9LhA/s1600/IMG_2958%255B1%255D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7T7gfvLyf6A/Vpl358Ba_MI/AAAAAAAAAIg/YD0MbDj9LhA/s320/IMG_2958%255B1%255D.JPG" width="240" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iJ8ABcHvwD4/Vpl39-8cwOI/AAAAAAAAAIo/IsJTGL_-UxU/s1600/IMG_2959%255B1%255D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iJ8ABcHvwD4/Vpl39-8cwOI/AAAAAAAAAIo/IsJTGL_-UxU/s320/IMG_2959%255B1%255D.JPG" width="240" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">9: 25am - As groups are finishing, I'm having them glue graphs onto their graphic organizers and instruct them to go ahead and start "Least, Greatest, or Neither" while we are waiting for other groups to finish up. Once every group is done with the first activity, we come together as a class and take notes on their graphic organizers regarding what they just discovered about Linear and Exponential Functions. We then all move onto the "LGN" activity where students are looking for absolute maximums or minimums of their remaining graphs and ultimately matching those graphs to quadratic of absolute value functions.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-flU_wcRReJ4/VphgNoDeRQI/AAAAAAAAAHY/dLq9JGJQr7Q/s1600/IMG_2937%255B1%255D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-flU_wcRReJ4/VphgNoDeRQI/AAAAAAAAAHY/dLq9JGJQr7Q/s320/IMG_2937%255B1%255D.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">9:50am - My time with this class is quickly coming to an end, so I'm going around to each group and giving out homework and going over the instructions. By giving the instructions to 4 students at a time, I know they are paying attention to what I'm telling them and can give them an opportunity to ask any questions they might have from today.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">10:01 am - Morning announcements come on and students begin to pick up their work space and put their materials back where they belong. Once announcements are over, I give final instructions one last time. The bell rings and they are off to break.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">10:04-10:12 am - Morning Break - My student teacher and I rejoin fellow math teachers out on hall duty to supervise our area... since students have 8 minutes of free time to socialize. (During this time, I occasionally have students come by to get help, make up work, or serve a break detention - but not today!)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">10:19-11:49 am - 2nd Period which is my planning period. I work on finalizing the foldable I'm making for my 3rd/4th periods on normal distributions. I then print, copy and cut all pieces needed for these classes. My student teacher works on one his assignments - going through the teacher and student handbook and then writing a reflection on a few of our policies. Time always goes so quickly during my planning and I work until the bell rings.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uVzWXRulucg/VphgdV3cV5I/AAAAAAAAAHo/zLqjYwVQ90w/s1600/IMG_2954%255B1%255D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uVzWXRulucg/VphgdV3cV5I/AAAAAAAAAHo/zLqjYwVQ90w/s320/IMG_2954%255B1%255D.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">11:54 am - My 3rd period class is Discrete math and is a combination of 16 juniors an seniors. Students begin class by working on their warm up, Tuesday 24, while I take attendance.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">11:59 am - After discussion possible solutions to the warm up, we pick back up on their activity from Monday (and Friday - what they were suppose to do while I was absent... but for some reason, they convince their substitute they didn't know what they were doing, so it didn't get accomplished.... but anyways.) Their activity from Monday was from<a href="https://education.ti.com/en/us/activity/detail?id=2312D32726294EF4AB06CABE123D51FF" target="_blank"> Texas Instruments Activity Exchange based on a NUMB3RS episode using Stylometry</a>, the use statistical analysis of sentence & paragraph length to determine who is the author of a passage.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">12: 20pm - Students finish the NUMB3RS activity and we move onto Normal Distributions. Students had to cut and put together their foldable booklet before we could begin. Luckily, we had done a similar booklet on our very first day of class (the week prior) so they had almost no trouble putting it together.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">12:21pm - A student looks at the weather on their phone and says, "It's going to start raining in exactly 54 minutes... That's what the weather channel app says!"</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">12:25 pm - Students begin working on the first 3 problem sets in the booklet with their groups using the empirical rule. My student teacher and I circulated throughout the classroom answering questions and asking for explanations on how to do problems. We also did a lot of redirecting and getting students back on task.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">12:38 pm - A student noticed a few snow flurries and everyone got excited... except for the kid that had trusted his weather app. He was disappointed that it wasn't precise in it's prediction.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">12:39 pm - I have to remind the class that they have problems to finish, regardless of the four snow flakes that had fallen!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">12:45 pm - Everyone was finished, I had a student read the 4th scenario out loud as well as its first question. Then I allowed students to discuss why this problem was different. (It wasn't a whole standard deviation away from the mean, therefore the empirical rule could apply!)</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QmsMDhSGEpA/Vpl3_AipPZI/AAAAAAAAAIw/1StARnpmPS8/s1600/IMG_2961%255B1%255D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QmsMDhSGEpA/Vpl3_AipPZI/AAAAAAAAAIw/1StARnpmPS8/s320/IMG_2961%255B1%255D.JPG" width="240" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">12:54 pm -The lunch bell rang and my students were off to lunch. My student teacher and I joined the rest of the math department in the teachers lounge for lunch. I heat up my leftover soup from the night before and enjoy the company of my department.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1:24pm - Students return from lunch and I introduction z-scores. However, I didn't give students the z-score formula, I gave them a piece of paper with the definition of z-scores and allowed them to work with their group members to figure out how to compute a z-score. This was taken from Sarah Hagan who writes the blog <a href="http://mathequalslove.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Math Equals Love</a>. This method worked wonderfully and can be found <a href="http://mathequalslove.blogspot.com/2015/11/introducing-z-scores.html" target="_blank">here</a>. Students actually understood what a z-score represented, without having a formula first! We then took brief notes on z-scores for their interactive notebooks and groups were off again to find z-scores for the remaining problems. (Because we only have a brief amount of time after lunch, I decided not to introduce the z-table so that students can find the percentage of data below the z-score and will cover this tomorrow.) During this time, I continued to circulate around to each group and encourage discourse between students. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KXTs34PUJQQ/Vpl4El4HXyI/AAAAAAAAAI4/t4g7MlSw_pw/s1600/IMG_2962%255B1%255D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KXTs34PUJQQ/Vpl4El4HXyI/AAAAAAAAAI4/t4g7MlSw_pw/s320/IMG_2962%255B1%255D.JPG" width="240" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Y5XNmQLP7XM/Vpl6WOapQ9I/AAAAAAAAAJA/kKLMf5nK3mk/s1600/IMG_2963%255B1%255D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Y5XNmQLP7XM/Vpl6WOapQ9I/AAAAAAAAAJA/kKLMf5nK3mk/s320/IMG_2963%255B1%255D.JPG" width="240" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1:50 pm - I give final instructions about what needs to be completed by the time students arrive in class tomorrow, had them clean up their work space, and answered final questions.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1:54 pm - Go back on hall duty for class change. Say "hi" to a lot of former students as they make their way to their last class of the day.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1:59 pm - My 4th period class is Discrete math and is a combination of 13 juniors an seniors. Students begin class by working on their warm up, Tuesday 24, while I take attendance. This class went very similar to 3rd period, except this group is a lot less talkative and a lot more focused on their work.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3:25 pm - Afternoon announcements come on.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3:27 pm - I gave final instructions and reminded my students to be careful on their way home - to drive cautiously and not be distracted. Even though there wasn't a lot of snow, it could get slick quickly.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3:28pm - The final school bell rings and students leave for the day. I return to the hall for my last hall duty of the day - making sure students clear the hallway!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3:35 pm - My student teacher and I discuss the day and how things went. We then talked about the plan for Wednesday and that he's already getting comfortable in my classroom and is a great asset. He then leaves for the afternoon, since he has a 45 minute commute and with the weather I don't want him to have any issues on his way home.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3:45 pm - I work in my classroom grading a few papers, compiling makeup work for absent students, updating my class webpage, and making sure things are ready for my first period tomorrow. I talk to another teacher about our plans to meeting tomorrow after school to discuss our plans for the next two weeks, since we both teach Math 1 and Discrete.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4:45pm - I leave school, the earliest I have in a while, but I have to go by the bank before it closes!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4:55 pm - Go to the bank and make my deposit. Talk with the teller about how strange our winter has been so far and how I wish it would finally snow. These snow flurries are just a tease!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">5:10 pm - Go to the grocery store. While picking up my two items, I see a current student, a former student, two teachers and one of my friends. I then go to check out - I pick the line where the cashier is a former student so that we can talk for a moment while she rings up my things. As I start to leave, I see the store manager who stops to talk about her daughter's progress in my class. I LOVE living in a small town, but sometimes you just want to run your errands and get home... but that doesn't happen.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">5:33 pm - I leave the grocery store and head home.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">5:35 pm - Arrive home and change out of my school clothes into my "comfy clothes." About that time, I get a text from my sister-in-law that they are home and that my nieces are waiting for me to get there to help them do their homework.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">5:45 pm - I leave for my sister-in-law's house. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">5:47 pm - Arrive at their house. I talk to her for a while about school-she use to be a math teacher at the same high school as me, but now she is an assistant principal at one the elementary schools in the county. (Our husbands prefer for us to talk "school talk" when they aren't around.)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">6:00 pm - My nieces have now interrupted our conversation at least 10 times, so I head back to the room where they are doing their homework. My nieces are in 2nd grade and Kindergarten so they don't have too much homework. It just takes a while because they are easily distracted.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">6:04 pm - My oldest niece is practicing her spelling words by doing "owl words," where if the word has a double o in it, you make to eyes and then write the word as a smile. My youngest niece is playing a matching game with her new sight words. Every time I go to work one-on-one with them, the other starts whining about how much they need my help. It's a constant struggle to get them to work.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">6:50 pm - On his way home from work, my husband comes over to give the girls hugs and kisses. Then we head home.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7:00 pm - After arriving home I start making pancakes for dinner.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7:15 pm - We eat pancakes and relax for a little while.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">8:00pm - My husband goes to workout and remember that I promised my oldest niece that should could do her reading to me tonight with FaceTime. So I FaceTime her and enjoy listening to her read. At first, we are continually interrupted by her little sister who complains that we are being too loud and that she doesn't know how to do something. Eventually things quiet down and she is able to get her 20 minutes of reading in. She has the camera pointed to her book and when she doesn't know a word, she zooms in and I'm able to help her. This is definitely one of the best parts of my day.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">8:30 pm - I say goodnight to my niece, give her kisses through the screen and tell her how much I enjoyed her reading. She asks if we can do it again tomorrow night!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">8:45 pm - My husband has finished his workout and and has had a a chance to shower so we relax on the couch together and enjoy our evening.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">9:30 pm - I go to bed to read for a little while before I fall asleep.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">~9:38 pm - I fall asleep.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then when my alarm goes off the next morning, I'm up and at it again. And that's what a typical school day looks like for me!</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00286711407489308282noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1282180922794305591.post-10880379092275155482015-11-23T15:30:00.000-05:002016-01-07T15:36:11.431-05:00Graph Theory Projects<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Out of the nine math teachers at my school, I'm one of two math teachers that is lucky enough to teach a course called discrete math. Although the other teachers argue it's not a "real math class" and some students do too, I absolutely adore teaching this course. I especially love that this class allows all students to be successful because they don't need any prior knowledge on the topics to do well. Since all students start off with knowing very little about any of the topics we will be studying, it levels the playing field among students. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">In discrete math we study a lot of discrete topics, hence the name. Some of the units of study in this course include: election theory, fair division, graph theory, probability, recursion, and matrices. My favorite topics are those on graph theory. In fact, we just spent the past seven weeks covering various graph theory topics and I'm a little sad to be moving on to probability today. (I didn't realize we had been on graph theory that long - I just looked at my notebook and saw we started the unit on September 30...crazy!)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The majority of students in this class are just trying to get their 4th math credit to meet North Carolina's graduation requirements, so I try to make this course as fun as possible. Fortunately for me, these topics lend themselves to projects. We culminate every topic with a project and a test. I typically give students 1-2 days to work in class on these projects and if needed, an additional day or two at home. Here are a few of the projects my students completed this semester. For the most part, my students put a lot of time and effort into their projects. I enjoy seeing a students creativity and personality come out through their projects. </span></div>

<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I grade projects on a rubric based on meeting the project requirements and being mathematically correct. However, since there are 26 students in my class this semester, I always have a few not-so-good projects or I have projects that look great but the math is wrong. To work on eliminating the latter problem, I've started putting a check system into my projects. Students are responsible for getting another student to look over their rough draft before they can begin making their final project. It counts as part of their project grade for both students (the student doing the check and the students work being checked.) That has helped but it hasn't completely gotten rid of the problem. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I know there are very few online resources for discrete math at the high school level so I'm working on getting my discrete math files uploaded to box.com but it's a slow process. Maybe between thanksgiving break and winter break, I'll be able to get this done before the end of the year! If you want any of my graph theory project files/grading rubrics before then, send me an <a href="mailto:jenniferlwilliams314@gmail.com" target="_blank">email</a>.</span></div>

<span style="color: #111111;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 16.003px;">My first post told you why I am starting a math blog, so I figured my second post should give you a little background information about who I am. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; line-height: 16.003px;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; line-height: 16.003px;">My name is Jennifer Williams and I am in my 7th year of teaching math in the northwest mountains of North Carolina. For the past four years, I had the joy of teaching 8th grade math at the middle school in my county. Luckily, for my sanity, this year I have been transferred back to the high school where I initially began my teaching career. </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; line-height: 16.003px;">(Let me just say that middle school teachers are crazy, loyal, and hard working. That career path is not for the faint of heart!)</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; line-height: 16.003px;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #111111; font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 16.003px;">I am married to my wonderful husband, Jamie, and we live about 30 </span><span style="line-height: 16.003px;">minutes</span><span style="line-height: 16.003px;"> outside of Boone, NC. Jamie works as an insurance agent and is extremely supportive of my job as a teacher. We do not have any children but we have two nieces and two nephews that we love to spend our free time with. I love being “Aunt Jennifer,” as they bring me so much pride and joy! </span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #111111;"><span style="line-height: 16.003px;"></span></span><br /><span style="color: #111111;"><span style="line-height: 16.003px;"></span></span><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #111111;"><span style="line-height: 16.003px;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</span></span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; line-height: 16.003px;">I am originally from Durham, NC and moved to the mountains of North Carolina to attended college at </span><a href="http://www.appstate.edu/" style="line-height: 16.003px;" target="_blank">Appalachian State University</a><span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; line-height: 16.003px;">. I graduated from AppState with my Bachelor of Science (2008) and Master of Arts (2009) in Mathematics Education. As a full time graduate student at AppState, I had a graduate assistantship with two professors that worked with rural math educators in the surrounding counties. That's how I found out about the school system where I'm currently employed. Even though I had lived in NC my entire life, I had never heard of this county before. In fact, my first time here was the day of my interview. Now, I can't imagine leaving. </span></span><br />

<span style="background: white; color: #111111;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I am beginning to blog about my math classroom as a part of the MTBoS. I've been reading math blogs for the past few years and they have had a great influence on my teaching. I could always turn to these trusted sites to get ideas for graphic organizers or activities to use with my lessons. But I was too bogged down with teaching and coaching to start sharing my own ideas (or so I thought.)</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="background: white; color: #111111;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="background: white; color: #111111;">However, during this past summer my school system started encouraging teachers to share what they are doing using social media. As a result, I created a Twitter account and I immediately started following a few of my favorite math bloggers. Then </span><a href="http://mathequalslove.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Sarah</a> posted on her blog about using the <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #111111;">hashtag <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/teach180?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Ehashtag" target="_blank">#teach180</a>. The goal was to take a picture of your classroom everyday and tweet about it. It was AWESOME! Immediately, I was able to view into a lot of other classrooms and even began to share snippets of my own. Sometime in October, Sarah</span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #111111;"> tweeted about the</span><span class="apple-converted-space" style="color: #111111;"> </span><a href="https://exploremtbos.wordpress.com/2015/10/18/a-new-exploration/" target="_blank">MTBoS mentoring program</a><span class="apple-converted-space" style="color: #111111;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #111111;">and I decided to take the plunge into the blogging world. </span></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="background: white; color: #111111;">My hope for blogging is to share what I'm doing in my class and give back to the math community that has inspired me to be a better teacher. </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="background: white; color: #111111;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">So here it goes...</span></span></div>
